Many immigrants aspire to become United States citizens. Becoming a U.S. citizen gives one greater rights and benefits than mere lawful residence (LPR status). These include:
- The right to vote
- The right to sponsor family for legal status
- The right to a U.S. passport with no travel restrictions
- Unlike an LPR, a citizen cannot lose immigration status due to criminal arrests or convictions
